Body mass index (BMI) calculator
Short answer
Body mass index (BMI) is calculated by dividing weight (kg) by the square of height (m²). Enter your height and weight — the result will be assessed according to the classification of the World Health Organization (WHO). If your body mass index is over 30, see an endocrinologist.

What BMI does not show
- BMI is only the ratio of height to weight and does not show how fat is distributed in the body. The doctor also recommends monitoring your waist circumference on an ongoing basis.
- The calculator is for adults. In children, BMI is assessed using age-based percentiles.
- The result is not a diagnosis. The hormonal and non-hormonal causes of overweight are investigated at a doctor’s examination.
